GOLD COAST MARATHON: EVERY RUNNER HAS A STORY

There’s something special about race morning on the Gold Coast.

The sky is still dark. The air is cool. Thousands of runners stand together carrying nerves, excitement and months of hard work. You can hear the ocean, feel the energy around you and know that everything you’ve trained for is about to begin.

As a running family ourselves, we know the Gold Coast Marathon is about so much more than a finish time.

For one of us, it’s months of training, early alarms and standing on the start line wondering if all the hard work will pay off.

For the other, it’s standing on the sidelines with the kids, coffee in hand, trying to spot familiar faces among thousands of runners.

We’ve experienced both sides of race weekend, and both are unforgettable.

For months, runners have trained for this weekend. In just a few hours, memories will be made that last a lifetime.

Whether you’re lining up for the 2km, 5km, 10km, Half Marathon, Marathon or taking on the legendary Double, this is your moment.

The Course: Where Beauty Meets Grit

The Gold Coast Marathon course is one of the reasons so many runners return year after year.

The cool winter morning, ocean views and flat roads create the perfect backdrop for chasing big goals and making lifelong memories.

But what stands out most isn’t the course itself, it’s the people.

Families and friends gather with coffee in hand. Kids reach out for high-fives. Volunteers give their time with a smile, and complete strangers cheer your name and hold motivational sign boards as if they’ve known you forever.

Out on the course, runners lift each other up too. You’ll hear words of encouragement shared between strangers, people slowing down to check on someone who’s struggling, and athletes sacrificing a few seconds on the clock to help someone else reach the finish line.

It’s a reminder that while everyone has their own race to run, nobody truly runs it alone.

Why We Run

Everyone standing on that start line has a story.

Some are chasing a personal best.

Some are running for someone they love.

Some are proving something to themselves.

Some simply run because running changed their life.

Behind almost every runner is someone who helped them get there, a partner, family member or friend who supported the early mornings, the long runs and the sacrifices along the way.

The supporters are part of the journey too.

Mindset Matters

Training gets you to the start line, but it’s your mindset that carries you home.

Stay patient early.

Trust your pacing.

Break the course into smaller sections.

Use the crowd when things get tough.

And always remember why you started.

You’ve already done the hard work.

Now trust yourself and enjoy every step.

For spectators, never underestimate the power of your encouragement.

One cheer at exactly the right moment can carry a runner much further than you realise.

Fuel & Hydration

Race day isn’t the day to experiment.

Stick with the nutrition you’ve practised.

Take your gels before you need them, sip fluids regularly and keep your energy steady throughout the race.

And spectators, don’t forget your own snacks and water. Supporting is hard work too.

Race Day Reminders

  • Double check your watch is actually charged, we’ve all learned that one the hard way.
  • Arrive early and enjoy the atmosphere.
  • Don’t start too fast.
  • Stick to your nutrition plan.
  • Use the crowd energy when things get tough.
  • Smile when you see the photographers.
  • Thank the volunteers.
  • Save something for the final kilometres.
  • Most importantly, soak up every moment.

To Every First-Timer

If this is your first Gold Coast Marathon weekend, welcome.

Whether you’re running or supporting, you’ll never forget the experience.

Crossing a finish line changes you.

Watching someone you love cross one does too.

Both moments are emotional.

Both are powerful.

Both are earned.

The Finish Line

Then comes the moment you’ve been waiting for.

Relief.

Pride.

Exhaustion.

Joy.

The medal goes around your neck and suddenly every early morning and every long training run feels worthwhile.

For spectators, seeing your runner appear in the finishing chute is something you’ll never forget.

The hugs.

The tears.

The smiles.

The photos.

And then comes Medal Monday—a chance to reflect on the courage, commitment and community that make this event so special.

To the volunteers, course marshals and aid station crews who give up their weekend to help complete strangers chase their goals, thank you.

You are part of every finish line story.

From our family to yours, we hope your Gold Coast Marathon weekend is everything you’ve trained and dreamed for.

Whether you’re chasing a PB, crossing your first finish line or simply cheering someone you love from the sidelines, soak up every moment.
